GLASSBORO, N.J. – William Paterson (14-8, 4-2 NJAC) fought back for a 12-5 win in the night cap, earning a doubleheader split in NJAC baseball action April 5 at Rowan (16-7, 3-4 NJAC).
The Profs' Ryan Kulik threw a complete-game one-hitter during the first game of the day, a 5-0 RU win, as Rowan's offense gave him all the support he would need with a single run in the third, followed by a score in both the sixth and seventh innings, and two more in the eighth.
Senior
Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) had the Pioneers' lone hit, a bunt single to lead off the seventh inning. Garrett Mull paced the Profs with a 3-for-3 effort, a double, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Roland Rodriguez was 2-for-4 at the dish.
Kulik struck out 12 and issued one walk during his 9.0 innings of work. Freshman
Chris Mongelli (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes) threw his first career complete game in the loss (2-2), allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned) in 8.0 innings with three strikeouts and three walks.
During the second game of the day, the Pioneers were ahead 3-1 after the third inning. Sophomore
Mike Guadango's (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) sacrifice fly scored Limone in the first inning. Limone crossed the plate in the third on a double by Guadango, who later went home on an error. The Profs came back with two runs in the bottom of the third for a 3-2 score.
William Paterson led 9-2 after four runs in the fourth inning and two in the sixth. Limone had a RBI-single in the fourth, third baseman
Scott Fischer (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills) doubled in a run, and Guadango drove in two more with a single. In the sixth,
Derek Koppinger (Columbia, N.J./North Warren) crossed the plate on an error, and catcher
Vince Joyce (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley) had a RBI-single. Rowan had three runs in the seventh inning and William Paterson added three more runs in the ninth.
Right hander
Dan VanderVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) got the win (3-1) after going 7.0 innings and giving up 11 hits and five runs (four earned).
Steve VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) pitched the last 2.0 innings, throwing shutout ball while allowing just one hit.
Limone was 3-for-5 with two RBI, three runs and two stolen bases. Guadango was 2-for-4 with a double, four RBI and one run scored, and Koppinger contributed with two hits in four at-bats, two RBIs and three runs scored.
The Pioneers will host Rutgers-Newark Monday, April 7, at 3:30 p.m.
