ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (22-17, 10-8 NJAC) will be the fifth seed in the 2008 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament after losing the final two games of the regular season, 7-4 and 10-9, at Richard Stockton April 26.
The Pioneers will be on the road for the first round of the tournament Thursday, May 1, playing at second-seeded Montclair State at 3:30 p.m. The remainder of the double-elimination tournament will be conducted Saturday-Monday, May 3-5, at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark.
In the opener, winning pitcher Scott Fisher allowed four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in a complete game. Fisher also went 1-for-4 at the plate with a two-run double in the fourth inning. Nick Corrado went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Pat Goodwin was 2-for-2 with a run and a RBI for Stockton.
Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) went 2-for-4 with a double and
Vincent Ganz (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) was 1-for-4 with two RBI for William Paterson.
Scott Zirul (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) took the loss (5-1) after pitching the complete game.
Fisher snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run double in the fourth inning that gave Stockton a 5-3 lead. In the fifth frame, Fisher reached on an error and two runs scored on the play to increase the Ospreys' lead to 7-3. Ganz stroked a RBI-single for William Paterson with two outs in the ninth inning, but Fisher retired the next batter to complete the 7-4 Stockton victory.
Stockton scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth to erase a 9-5 deficit and win the nightcap 10-9 on a walk-off single by Jeff Lundell, who was 3-for-5 with two RBI in the game. Goodwin also went 3-for-5 with a triple and three runs for the Ospreys.
Will Courter (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and
Vince Joyce (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley) was 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI for William Paterson.
The Pioneers scored five unearned runs in the eighth inning to take a 9-5 lead.
Anthony Perrone (Midland Park, N.J./Bergen Catholic) stroked a two-run single and later scored on a balk, while Joyce and
John Elia (Emerson, N.J./Pascack Valley) added RBI-singles in the inning.
Stockton roared back with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the ninth to snatch the 10-9 victory. The last four tallies came on four consecutive RBI-hits with two outs. Goodwin blasted a RBI-triple and scored on a single by Fisher, who then stole second base. Next, Joe Sacerdote slapped a RBI-single and advanced to second on the throw home. Lundell then ripped a walk-off single to score Sacerdote with the winning run.
Dan VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) started on the mound for WP and threw 8.2 innings.
Steve Schlitzer (West New York, N.J./Memorial) suffered the loss (3-4) after allowing the winning run in relief.
