Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Senior Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) was 3-for-3 as the William Paterson baseball team (13-6) outlasted a late-game comeback bid by Staten Island (5-9), holding on for a 10-8 victory at Pioneer Baseball Park April 2.

Limone added two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases to his 3-for-3 afternoon. Five other Pioneers each had a hit as WP managed to score 10 runs off of just eight hits. Anthony Piccirillo led the Dolphins with a 2-for-3 effort and two runs scored.

Freshman Kyle Schlemm (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) earned his first career victory (1-0), allowing four hits and four runs (three earned) with eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Classmate Paul Albanese (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park) picked up his first save with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. James Mardikos suffered the loss (2-3), giving up one hit and three runs (one earned) before being forced from the mound due to an apparent injury with two outs in the first inning.

Sophomore Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) had a RBI-double and senior Vince Joyce (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Wallkill Valley) hit a sacrifice fly to help give William Paterson a 3-0 edge in the first. The Dolphins scored an unearned run following two Pioneer errors in the top of the second, but freshman Kevin Ryan (Edison, N.J./Edison), junior Will Courter (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) and senior Anthony Perrone (Midland Park, N.J./Bergen Catholic) each had run-scoring singles in the bottom of the inning as WP seized a 7-1 lead.

Two Pioneers scampered home following a two-out, bases-loaded error during the bottom of the third, making it a 9-1 game, before CSI crossed the plate three times in the fifth. A Pat Taaffe single and a Bill Boland double were followed by a wild pitch, scoring Taaffe. Piccirillo walked, and scored with Boland following a Matt Thompson double down the left-field line.

Limone's sacrifice fly scored Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) in the bottom of the fifth for a 10-4 advantage, and the Pioneers seemed to cruise from that point until the top of the eighth, when Staten Island mounted a rally and scored four runs to pull within two at 10-8. Mo Hamad's two-run single, as well as a RBI-single off the bat of Pat Gale and a run-scoring groundout, put the tying run at the plate with one out. Reliever Greg Stokes (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) was lifted for Albanese, who struck out the next two hitters to end the threat.

The Pioneers will play at No. 10 Kean Thursday, April 3, at 3:30 p.m. before hosting Rutgers-Newark Friday, April 4, at 3:30 p.m.
