WAYNE, N.J. – Thirty-one hits over the course of the afternoon allowed William Paterson (19-9. 9-2 NJAC) to earn a conference doubleheader sweep of visiting Rutgers-Camden (7-20, 1-10 NJAC) April 12, 12-5 and 8-4, and extend the Pioneers' NJAC winning streak to six games.

Sophomore Scott Zirul (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) threw the full nine innings for the Pioneers in the opener to improve to 5-0 this season, allowing nine hits and five runs (four earned) with two walks and three strikeouts. Classmate Vin Ganz (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) was one of four Pioneers with three hits, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored and four RBI. Senior Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) was also 3-for-4, adding two runs and a pair of RBI, while senior Anthony Perrone (Midland Park, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and sophomore Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) were each 3-for-5 for WP.

Scott Fruits and Shawn Park were both 2-for-5 for the Scarlet Raptors. Starter Andrew Lihotz suffered the loss on the hill (2-4), giving up 12 hits and nine runs (five earned) in 4.2 innings.

Rutgers-Camden opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but the Pioneers responded with two scores in the first and a single run in the third for a 3-1 lead. The Scarlet Raptors then tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth, scoring twice thanks to a passed ball and a RBI-ground out by Mike Gabrielski, but William Paterson took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth and five scores in the fifth, a spurt highlighted by Ganz's two-run double down the right-field line.

During the second half of the doubleheader, Rutgers-Camden again was the first to strike, scoring a single run during its first at-bat when Kyle Ballay drew a bases-loaded walk. Neither team crossed the plate again until the bottom of the third inning, when the Pioneers pushed across four runs. A Ganz double to center sent home Derek Koppinger (Columbia, N.J./North Warren Regional), a Laguerre single drove in Limone and Ganz, and Laguerre later scored from third base on a double-play ball, making it a 4-1 score in WP's favor.

William Paterson tacked on three more runs in the fourth, when Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) emptied the bases with a triple to right-center, giving the Pioneers a 7-1 advantage. The Scarlet Raptors fought back to score twice during the seventh inning, and had the tying run at the plate with two outs, but Pioneer starter Steve Schlitzer (West New York, N.J./Memorial) was able to induce an inning-ending fly out to maintain a 7-3 edge.

Perrone's double and Joyce's single up the middle pushed WP ahead 8-3 in the seventh, and Camden scored the game's final run with a RBI-fielder's choice during the top of the eighth inning.

Schlitzer struck out seven and walked six in 7.0 innings, giving up two hits and three runs for the victory (3-2). Senior Steve VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) pitched the final 2.0 innings, striking out four and allowing two hits and a run. Eric Bosworth took the loss for Rutgers-Camden (1-5), throwing 2.0 innings and giving up seven hits and four runs.

Ganz was 2-for-3 in the night cap with a double, and Guadango nearly hit for the cycle with a single, double and triple, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBI. Joyce and Koppinger each added a pair of hits for William Paterson, while four different players each had a single for the Scarlet Raptors.

William Paterson will return to action Tuesday, April 15, hosting Drew for a single game at 3:30 p.m.
