Box Score

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – William Paterson improved to 6-2 in NJAC baseball play with a 10-3 victory at New Jersey City (9-18, 1-7 NJAC) April 10.

The Pioneers, now 16-9 overall, scored five runs through three innings to take control of the contest. Sophomore Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI, while senior Anthony Perrone (Midland Park, N.J./Bergen Catholic) added a two-run triple and sophomore Vin Ganz (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) was 2-for-5 at the plate.

Junior Dan VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) picked up the victory on the mound (4-1), striking out seven in 7.0 innings, allowing one run, nine hits and one walk. Senior Steve Schlitzer (West New York, N.J./Memorial) threw the final 2.0 innings, giving up three hits and two unearned runs while striking out three.

William Paterson took a 2-0 lead during the first, thanks to a Perrone RBI-walk and a Vince Joyce (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley) sacrifice fly. That edge grew to 5-0 in the third when Laguerre plated John Elia (Emerson, N.J./Pascack Valley) and Joyce with a double, followed by a Derek Koppinger (Columbia, N.J./North Warren) single that scored Laguerre from second.

Back-to-back walks to start the sixth inning set up Perrone for a bases-clearing triple, and he trotted home after a throwing error by the Gothic Knight shortstop, making it an 8-0 score. New Jersey City got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but WP pulled ahead 8-3 in the top of the eighth. Joyce reached on a two-out error, scored after an Elia double, and Elia crossed home on a Laguerre single. NJCU finished the scoring with two unearned runs in the home-half of the eighth.

William Paterson will return to action Friday, April 11, hosting No. 11 Kean at 3:30 p.m.
