Box Score
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Senior
Anthony Perrone's (Midland Park, N.J./Bergen Catholic) two-run double in the top of the ninth lifted William Paterson (5-4) to a 13-11 victory against Springfield March 18 at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
Trailing 11-10 entering their final at-bat, the Pioneers'
John Elia (Emerson, N.J./Pascack Valley) started the inning with a ground-rule double, and advanced to third after a
Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) single. Sophomore
Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) grounded into a fielder's choice, plating Elia to tie the score but resulting in an out at second. Pinch hitter
Kevin Ryan (Edison, N.J./Edison) drew a walk, followed by a groundout that moved Laguerre to third and Ryan to second. Perrone then doubled off the wall in center field, giving William Paterson the 13-11 lead.
William Paterson secured a 3-0 edge in the first following a two-run Perrone double and a run-scoring single up the middle off the bat of
Scott Fischer (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills). Springfield scored a run in the bottom of the third, followed by an unearned WP run in the fifth and a solo home run by Springfield in the bottom of the same inning.
The Pioneers took a 5-2 lead in the sixth, but Springfield tied the game with three runs in the home half of the inning. Elia and Laguerre had sacrifice flies, and Fischer scampered home on a passed ball, for an 8-5 lead in the seventh, but again Springfield had a response, scoring four runs for its first lead of the game at 9-8.
Fischer's two-RBI double in the eighth took the lead back for WP in the eighth (10-9), but it was short lived as Springfield plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Limone was 4-for-4, Fischer was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, and Perrone was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBI.
Vince Joyce (Franklin, N.J./Walkill Valley) added three hits and scored three runs.
Freshman
Chris Mongelli (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes) started for William Paterson and allowed six hits and five runs (three earned) in 5.1 innings while striking out five. Classmate
Paul Albanese (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park) pitched 1.0 inning, giving up three runs on two hits, and senior
