SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Two runs in the bottom of the seventh gave SUNY Brockport a 6-5 victory against William Paterson (4-4) March 17 at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
Sophomore
Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) gave WP a 1-0 lead in the third when he tripled home junior
Derek Koppinger (Columbia, N.J./North Warren). SUNY Brockport answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the Pioneers scored three more times in the fifth. Koppinger again led off the inning with a single, and after being sacrificed to second, scored after a Laguerre double. Sophomore
Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) then hit his second home run of the year over the fence in left-center, staking WP to a 4-2 advantage.
Brockport tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but William Paterson battled back with a RBI-single from Guadango in the seventh to take a 5-4 edge. However, Brockport was able to push two unearned runs across the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and the Pioneers stranded a pair of runners in the eighth to end their comeback hopes.
Guadango was 2-for-5 with three RBI, including a two-run homer.
Vince Joyce (Franklin, N.J./Walkill Valley) was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Koppinger was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Senior
Steve Schlitzer (West New York, N.J./Memorial) suffered the loss (0-1), allowing eight hits and six runs (four earned) in 7.0 innings while walking two and striking out nine. Junior
Mark Robbins (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) threw the final inning, giving up one hit.
William Paterson will return to action Tuesday, March 18, against Springfield at 10:30 a.m. MT.
