TEMPE, Ariz. – Seven different Pioneers had multi-hit games as the William Paterson baseball team (2-2) cruised to a 22-8 victory against Calvin (8-1) March 14 in its first game at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
The Pioneers jumped ahead early, scoring six runs in the top of the first on their way to a 13-1 lead after two-and-a-half innings. Sophomore
Vin Ganz (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) led the offensive onslaught, going 5-for-5 at the plate with a home run, three RBI and four runs scored. Classmate
Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) was 4-for-6 with a solo round-tripper, two RBI and four runs, while sophomore
Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) and seniors
Anthony Perrone (Midland Park, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and
Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) each had three hits for William Paterson. In all, five of WP's 24 hits were for extra bases.
Freshman
Chris Mongelli (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes) earned his first career victory (1-1), allowing eight hits and five runs (two earned) while striking out three and walking four in 6.0 innings. Classmate
Darren Ritchie (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) threw the final 3.0 innings, giving up three unearned runs on three hits.
William Paterson will take on Western New England in a doubleheader Saturday, March 15, at 12:00 p.m. MT in Phoenix.
