Johnson's Fast Start Powers WP to 69-58 Win

. – Junior Asia Johnson (Wildwood, N.J./Wildwood) scored 11 of the Pioneers' first 15 points to power the William Paterson women's basketball team (15-5) to a 69-58 victory at Drew (6-14) Feb. 6.
 
The Pioneers jumped out to a 9-2 lead and entered the intermission with a 36-24 edge. Johnson scored 11 first-half points and was 5-for-7 (.714) from the field, part of a 45.2 (14-31) percent shooting effort for WP during the game's first 20 minutes. William Paterson's lead didn't shrink to single digits until the 3:04 mark of the second half (63-54).
 
For the game, Johnson added eight rebounds and five blocked shots to her 19 points. Senior Michelle Pellichero (Milltown, N.J./Bishop Ahr) was the only other player in double figures with 10 tallies. Junior Joi Stevens (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) added three assists and six points, while sophomore Julie Haledjian (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) chipped in with eight points.
 
William Paterson will return to the Rec Center and NJAC action when the Pioneers host Richard Stockton Saturday, Feb. 9, at 3:00 p.m. WP will celebrate “Take a Kid to the Game Day' as well as “National Girls and Women in Sports Day” on Feb. 9th.  Children under the age of 14 will be admitted for free.
