Box Score

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Junior Elisa Brown (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) drained a jumper with three seconds to play, allowing the William Paterson women's basketball team (3-1) to win a see-saw 67-66 contest against Colby (2-1) Nov. 29 in the Red Hawk/Pioneer Classic at Montclair State.

William Paterson led by six (55-49) with 6:23 to play, but the Mules kept pressing the Pioneers, pushing ahead by one at 62-61 with 1:47 remaining thanks to a pair of Julianne Kowalski free throws. Junior Kelly McCourt (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) answered with a basket to regain the lead (63-62, 1:22), but Colby's Heather Quadir knocked down a jumper (64-63, 0:52) to give Colby a one-point edge. McCourt's bucket with 30 seconds on the clock changed the lead again, this time 65-64 in the Pioneers' favor, but Kowalski found the bottom of the net to stake the Mules to a 66-65 lead with 10 seconds remaining. Brown then scored the game's final field goal, the sixth lead change of the last 1:47, for the William Paterson victory.

Although Colby's 45.3 (24-53) percent shooting out-paced William Paterson's 31.6 (24-76) percent effort, the Pioneers' 22-6 advantage in offensive rebounds led to a 24-4 edge in second-chance points. William Paterson also caused 25 Colby turnovers, scoring 21 points off of those miscues.

Sophomore April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) posted her fourth double-double in as many games with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Freshman BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) added 15 tallies, three assists and three steals, while junior Julie Haledjian (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) contributed 13 points and five assists.

Kowalski led Colby with 19 points, while Rachel Mack and Alison Cappelloni each scored 12 points for the Mules.

William Paterson will host the second day of the Red Hawk/Pioneer Classic on Saturday, Nov. 30. Montclair State will take on Colby at 1:00 p.m., followed by William Paterson and Stevens at 3:00 p.m. at the Rec Center.
