Julie Haledjian (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) and sophomore
April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) earned spots on the All-Tournament Team, but the William Paterson women's basketball team (2-1) was unable to bring home the title, as host No. 24 Muhlenberg (2-0) earned a 72-62 victory in the Scotty Wood Tournament championship game Nov. 22.
Smith averaged 19.5 points and 14.5 rebounds during the two games, including 16 tallies and 13 caroms in the final against the Mules. Haledjian posted 10 points, five rebounds and five assists in the championship game to average 10.0 points and 4.0 assists per contest at the two-day tournament.
The Pioneers led by as many as seven early in the contest (13-6, 15:44), but with the game tied at 19-19 at the midway point of the first half, Muhlenberg engineered a 17-4 run (36-23, 4:59) en route to a 41-32 advantage at the break.
William Paterson pulled to within four as late as the 12:44 mark of the second half (51-47), but Muhlenberg scored nine straight points to re-establish a double-digit lead (60-47, 8:27). When the Pioneers scored 11 unanswered points, eight coming from the charity stripe, to make it a 64-59 contest with 3:38 to play, the Mules went 6-for-8 (.750) from the free-throw line down the stretch to secure the victory.
Junior
Elisa Brown (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) added nine points and six rebounds for William Paterson, while classmate
Erin Cook (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) chipped in eight tallies and six caroms.
Tournament MVP Lauren Boyle led all scorers with her 19 points for Muhlenberg, while all-tournament selection Kelly McKeon had 17 points and 11 rebounds.
William Paterson will return to action next weekend in the Red Hawk/Pioneer Classic. On Saturday, Nov. 29, the Pioneers will face Colby at 3:00 p.m. at Montclair State, and on Sunday, Nov. 30, William Paterson will play its home opener, hosting Stevens Tech at 3:00 p.m.
