WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson's defensive pressure was too much for Rutgers-Camden, as the Pioneers (10-3, 2-0 NJAC) ran away with a 64-39 victory against the Scarlet Raptors (4-8, 1-2 NJAC) Jan. 12 at the Rec Center.
Rutgers-Camden had nearly as many turnovers (30) as points (39), and William Paterson turned those miscues into 24 tallies. The Pioneers cruised to a 16-point halftime lead (30-14), and that advantage quickly turned into a 29-point edge 6:11 into the second half (48-19) as WP began the period with an 18-5 run.
William Paterson out-scored Rutgers-Camden 14-4 on the break and 20-7 in bench points. The Pioneers also were efficient from beyond the arc, making seven of 17 (.412) attempts. WP received votes in this week's d3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, and has now won nine of its last 10 contests.
Senior guard Michelle Pellichero (Milltown, N.J./Bishop Ahr) returned from a three-game absence to score a game-best 16 points, adding four assists. Sophomore Julie Haledjian (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) contributed nine tallies, junior Asia Johnson (Wildwood, N.J./Wildwood) had seven points and a game-best 10 rebounds, and sophomore Elisa Brown (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) posted seven points, nine boards and five steals.
Freshman Karima Blackwell led Rutgers-Camden with 14 points.
William Paterson will play at local rival Montclair State Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 6:00 p.m.
