QUEENS , N.Y. – The William Paterson women's tennis team (1-0) started its 2007 season with a 5-4 victory against John Jay (1-1) at York (N.Y.) College Sept. 8.

The Pioneers started the match by winning two of the three doubles matches, as Rachel Menzzopane (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) and Cristina Reilly (Seaville, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) teamed up for an 8-3 victory at second doubles, and Ashley Hessenkemper (Brick Twp., N.J./Brick Twp.) and Evelyn Tam (Paterson, N.J./Passaic Tech) were victorious at third doubles, 8-0.

William Paterson won the team match thanks to victories in the last three singles contests. Reilly won at fourth singles, 6-3 and 6-4, Hessenkemper won 6-0, 6-0 at fifth, and Tam earned a victory at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-0.

The victory also was the first of head coach Mary Lou Rios' career. Rios is in her first season as William Paterson's coach after playing at Montclair State and graduating in 2005.

The Pioneers will next play Tuesday, Sept. 11, at St. Elizabeth at 4:00 p.m.
