WAYNE , N.J. – A goal with less than 90 seconds remaining gave Wesley (1-0) a 3-2 victory against the William Paterson field hockey team (0-1) in both teams' season opener Sept. 1 at Wightman Stadium.

The Wolverines struck first when Taryn Neeman scored an unassisted goal 11 minutes into the contest. Just 59 seconds later, Erin Bailey knocked in Danielle Vincent's rebound to give Wesley a 2-0 lead.

William Paterson answered with 8:31 remaining in the first half off of a penalty corner, as sophomore Melissa Szeliga (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) punched in a rebound to cut the advantage to one.

The play went back and forth for most of the second half until sophomore Amber Scott (Palmyra, N.J./Palmyra) poked in her own rebound with 3:32 to play, scoring her first career goal and evening the game at 2-2. It appeared that the two teams would head into overtime, but Brooke Tadlock received a pass from Vincent three feet from the cage and scored with 1:19 on the clock to give the Wolverines the victory.

Sophomore Christina Auger (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) made seven saves in her first career start in goal for the Pioneers. Senior LeAnne Hyslop made seven stops for Wesley.

“We had some players step up and do some nice things today,” said fourth-year head coach Lindsay Bard. “But we didn't all step up together as a group of 11. This game didn't show what we are capable of, but we will have to bounce back and get ready for the next game.”

The Pioneers will finish their weekend with a home game against Manhattanville Sunday, Sept. 2, at 2:00 p.m.
