NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (11-8-2, 2-4-1 NJAC) dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark (7-17, 4-3 NJAC), 3-27 and 7-9, April 7.
The Scarlet Raiders owned a 6-0 lead after three innings in the nightcap, but the Pioneers tied the game with six scores in the top of the fourth. Freshman
Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) had a RBI single up the middle, followed by run-scoring singles by
Will Courter (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) and
Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck).
Rick Pignatello's (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) walk pushed a run home, and
Wayne Poppe's (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern) single to left plated two more to make it a 6-6 contest.
Rutgers-Newark regained the lead with one run in the fourth, and tacked on two more in the bottom of the eighth.
Don Reinertsen's (Swartzwood, N.J./Kittatinny) single drove home Pignatello in the top of the ninth to pull the Pioneers within two (7-9), but WPU could not score again.
Reinertsen had three of William Paterson's eight hits. Poppe was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Senior
Mike Santana (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) started the second game, allowing eight hits and six runs (five earned) in 2.1 innings. Classmate
Christian Miranda (Bogota, N.J./Bergen Catholic) threw the next 3.1 innings, surrendering three hits and one earned run while striking out five hitters. Senior
Tim Cowan (Elizabeth, N.J./Roselle Catholic) allowed three hits and two earned runs in 1.2 innings, while
Steve VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) threw 0.2 inning of scoreless relief.
In the first game, Rutgers-Newark jumped out of the gates with eight runs in the home half of the first, and plated 11 runs in the eighth. Pignatello led the Pioneers with a 3-for-3 effort, one run scored and a RBI.
Dan VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) started for WPU, allowing 10 hits and 11 runs in 2.1 innings.
William Paterson will host FDU-Florham Tuesday, April 10, at 3:30 p.m.
