Box Score

WAYNE , N.J. – Freshman Greg Stokes (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) threw seven innings of shutout ball as the William Paterson baseball team (16-14-2) cruised to an 11-1 victory against visiting Manhattanville (16-15) April 24.

Stokes scattered four hits to improve to 4-0 on the season, striking out four Valiants while issuing one walk.

A wild pitch that plated Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands), followed by a Will Courter (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) RBI single and a Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) sacrifice fly, gave WPU a 3-0 edge after the second inning, and a run-scoring walk by Ted King (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor South), Chris Arecchi's (Hazlet, N.J./St. John Vianney) first of two sacrifice flies, and a Courter two-run single through the left side of the infield, pushed the Pioneers ahead 7-0 after three.

RBI-singles by Guadango and King in the fourth, and a fifth-inning Wayne Poppe (Sloatsburg, N.J./Suffern) run-scoring double, made the score 10-0.

Manhattanville scored its lone run in the top of the eighth when Nick Parente trotted home on a wild pitch. Arecchi plated the game's final run with a sacrifice fly during the home half of the eighth.

Guadango led the Pioneers with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, three runs scored and a RBI. Ryan Brand (Monroe, N.J./Marlboro) went 3-for-5, while Courter was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Paul Blejec was 2-for-3 with a double to pace the Valiants.

Christian Miranda (Bogota, N.J./Bergen Catholic) allowed an earned run and three hits in an inning of relief, followed by a perfect ninth inning thrown by Mike Irwin (North Haledon, N.J./Manchester Regional). Mark McCaffrey suffered the loss (1-1), allowing three hits and six earned runs in 2.0 innings.
