Dan VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) tossed a complete-game three-hitter as the William Paterson baseball team (15-11-2, 3-7-1 NJAC) defeated visiting Rutgers-Camden (12-17, 1-9 NJAC), 5-0, April 19.
The Pioneers started the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Junior
Vince Joyce (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley) singled through the right side of the infield, followed by a base hit up the middle from senior
Rick Pignatello (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills). Senior
Wayne Poppe (Sloatsburg, N.J./Suffern) laced a single back up the middle, and Scarlet Raptor catcher Vince Giunta was unable to hold on to the ball and apply the tag, allowing Joyce to break the scoreless tie. During the very next at-bat,
Don Reinertsen (Swartzwood, N.J./Kittatinny) flared a single over the shortstop's head, plating Pignatello for a 2-0 advantage.
William Paterson made it a 3-0 edge in the home half of the fourth when a wild pitch scored senior
Ryan Brand (Monroe, N.J./Marlboro). Classmate
Ted King (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor South) finished the scoring with a two-run blast over the fence in right-center field in the bottom of the sixth.
VandeVrede struck out four without issuing a walk in his 9.0 innings of work, scattering three hits (3-4). Damien Wright suffered the loss (1-3), allowing seven hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out seven Pioneers in 8.0 innings.
Six different Pioneers had hits, led by Pignatello's 2-for-4 effort, including a triple. King was 1-for-4 with the two-run homer.
William Paterson will return to action Saturday, April 21, with a doubleheader at Montclair State at 12:00 p.m.
