No. 5 Kean Sweeps Pair at William Paterson

WAYNE , N.J. – Fifth-ranked Kean (21-4, 8-1 NJAC) completed a doubleheader sweep of William Paterson (12-11-2, 2-7-1 NJAC), 17-3 (seven innings) and 8-2, April 14 at the Pioneer Baseball Park.

Three runs in the top of the third, and eight in the top of the fourth, helped the Cougars cruise to the victory in the opener. Perry Schatzow led Kean at the plate with a 4-for-5 effort, two runs scored, two RBI and a double. Maikel De La Rosa was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, and Aaron Richard went 3-for-4, scoring two runs and slapping a double. Junior Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) led William Paterson, batting 2-for-3 with a RBI. Classmate Don Hays (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs driven in.

Joe Augustine earned the victory with 6.0 innings of two-hit, shutout ball and nine strikeouts (5-1). Joe Bartlinski allowed two hits and three earned runs in the seventh inning. Senior Mike Santana (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) suffered the loss (2-1), surrendering 12 hits and 10 runs in 3.1 innings. Classmate Tim Cowan (Elizabeth, N.J./Roselle Catholic) gave up two hits and an earned run in 0.2 inning, followed by freshman Greg Stokes (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills), who allowed nine hits and six runs (four earned) in 2.0 innings on the hill.

In the second game of the twinbill, each team scored two runs in the first inning, but Kean broke the tie with a pair of runs in the third inning, followed by two more in the sixth and single scores in the seventh and ninth. Dan Mattonelli was 3-for-5 for the Cougars with a pair of runs scored, while Joseph D'Andrea went 3-for-3, including two doubles. Limone and Ted King (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor South) each had a pair of hits for the Pioneers.

Daniel Zeffiro earned his fifth victory of the year (5-1), scattering seven hits over 8.0 innings, allowing two earned runs and a walk while striking out four. Brandon Aich pitched the final inning for the Cougars. Dan VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) surrendered seven hits and six runs (five earned) in 6.0 innings (2-4). Don Reinertsen (Swartzwood, N.J./Kittatinny) gave up four hits and two earned runs in 3.0 innings of relief.

William Paterson will be back in action Monday, Aug. 16, when the Pioneers host Rowan at 3:30 p.m.
