WAYNE, N.J. --
The William Paterson softball team (15-5) ran its winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of DeSales (4-10), 11-3 (five innings) and 7-3, April 1 at the Pioneer Softball Field.
The Pioneers were hot at the plate from the start, scoring three runs in the first inning of the opener. Freshman Jessica Reibis (Jackson, N.J./Jackson) singled to the shortstop and scored thanks to an Alicia Albert (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) double to right-center. Following a fly ball that moved Albert to third, and an Ana Abourashed (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) walk, freshman Casey Sierra (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) blooped a ball over the head of the third baseman, an infield double that plated Albert. Freshman Christine Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) drove in the final run of the inning with a single up the middle, giving the Pioneers a 3-1 lead.
William Paterson tacked on four more runs in the second. Senior Brandi Kavaliauskas' (Sicklerville, N.J./Highland Regional) leadoff single and stolen base were followed by a RBI-single by Reibis. Reibis then stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) single to right. Abourashed blasted a home run to left-center field, her third round-tripper in two days, to make the score 7-1.
The Bulldogs scored two unearned runs in the top of the fourth after a two-out error by the Pioneers, but William Paterson got them back with a pair of scores in the bottom half of the inning. Albert knocked her second home run of the season off the scoreboard down the left-field line, and Sierra doubled in Reilly to make it a 9-3 game. Albert's two-run double in the fifth gave the Pioneers an eight-run lead and ended the game.
Junior Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) picked up her ninth victory of the season (9-1), allowing six hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out one in 5.0 innings without issuing a walk. Albert led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort, two runs, four RBI, two doubles and a home run. Reibis, Reilly and Sierra (two doubles) each had a pair of hits for the Pioneers.
The Bulldogs had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the second of Game Two, but a fielder's choice out at the plate and a strikeout kept the game scoreless.
In the home half of the same inning, Sierra reached second thanks to a Bulldog error, and was lifted for pinch runner Tina Londino (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City), who scored during the next at-bat when Zippler doubled to right-center field.
Kelly Moran's double that fell between the Pioneers' crossing center and right fielders plated Jennifer Cybularz for the Bulldogs' run in the third, evening the score. However, William Paterson exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to six straight singles, taking a commanding 6-1 lead.
Albert's triple to right field in the fourth inning drove in Reibis, giving the Pioneers a 7-1 advantage. DeSales plated two unearned runs in the sixth inning to finish the scoring.
Freshman Ashley McDonald (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) improved to 2-2 with 6.1 innings of work, surrendering six hits, three runs (one earned), three walks and four strikeouts. Classmate Danielle Ballard (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) threw 1.2 innings of relief.
Albert was again 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. For the afternoon, she was a combined 6-for-8, hitting for the cycle (two singles, two doubles, one triple, one home run), scoring three runs and driving in six. Kavaliauskas was 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while Zippler was 2-for-2 with a double.
The Pioneers received five votes (30th) in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.
William Paterson will return to conference action Tuesday, April 3, at Rowan at 3:00 p.m.
