Pioneers, Gothic Knights Split Twinbill

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (9-6-2, 1-2-1 NJAC) split a doubleheader at New Jersey City (9-9, 1-2 NJAC), 13-7 and 6-14, March 31.

The Pioneers built a 3-0 lead by the end of the second inning of the opener, and scored seven runs over the final three innings to secure the victory. Senior Don Reinertsen (Swartzwood, N.J./Kittatinny) was 6-for-6 with four RBI, three runs scored, a pair of doubles and a triple, while freshman Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) was 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored, hitting a two-run homer in the eighth inning.

Sophomore Dan VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) picked up his second win of the year (2-2), allowing nine hits, three runs (two earned) and striking out six in 6.0 innings. Junior Steve Schlitzer (West New York, N.J./Memorial) gave up four hits and three runs (two earned) in 2.0 innings, and Reinertsen threw the final frame, surrendering two hits and an earned run.

In the nightcap, the Gothic Knights hit their way to a 12-0 lead after three innings. Reinertsen and Guadango each had a pair of singles for the Pioneers. Junior Steve VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) suffered the loss (1-1), allowing 12 hits and eight earned runs in 3.0 innings. Junior Luis Fernandez (West New York, N.J./Memorial) made his first appearance on the mound for the Pioneers, striking out five while walking two and allowing four hits and two earned runs in 5.0 innings.

William Paterson's home game against Union (N.Y.) Sunday, April 1, has been called off. The Pioneers will return to action Tuesday, April 3, at The College of Staten Island at 3:30 p.m.
