Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Twelve innings and four hours were not enough to create a winner as the William Paterson baseball team (8-5-2, 0-1-1 NJAC) played to a 7-7 tie at Richard Stockton (12-4-1, 1-0-1 NJAC) March 30. The game was ended due to darkness.

A RBI single by freshman Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) and a two-run double by senior Ryan Brand (Monroe, N.J./Marlboro) gave the Pioneers a 4-2 lead in the eighth, but the Ospreys strung together five hits to score four runs and take a 6-4 edge in the bottom half of the inning.

An error, passed ball and two hit batsmen resulted in three unearned runs for William Paterson in the top of the ninth, pushing the Pioneers ahead, 7-6, but a two-out RBI single by Stockton's Pat Goodwin tied the score and forced extra innings.

WPU stranded five runners in the three extra frames, and a total of 15 during the contest. Stockton went down in order in the 10th and 12th innings, leaving one runner at second base in the 11th.

Senior Don Reinertsen (Swartzwood, N.J./Kittatinny) was 3-for-5 with two intentional walks, while classmate Ted King (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor South) was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.

Senior Mike Irwin (North Haledon, N.J./Manchester Regional) started for William Paterson on the hill, throwing 7.1 innings and surrendering six hits and four runs, striking out eight Ospreys. Junior Steve Schlitzer (West New York, N.J./Memorial) threw the next 1.1 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. Senior Christian Miranda (Bogota, N.J./Bergen Catholic) pitched the final 3.1 innings, scattering two hits and registering two strikeouts.

William Paterson will play a doubleheader at New Jersey City Saturday, March 31, at 11:30 a.m.
