Box Score
WAYNE , N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (7-4-1) lost a 4-2 decision to No. 6 SUNY Cortland (13-0) March 25 at the Pioneer Baseball Park.
Cortland State struck first with a run in the second inning. Left fielder Dan Maycock led off the frame with a single to right-center, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third thanks to a grounder hit to the second baseman. Nick DeVito's sacrifice fly plated Maycock, giving the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead.
Mike Zaccardo's blast over the right-field fence, and an unearned run that was a result of two Pioneer errors, gave the Red Dragons a 3-0 edge in the top of the seventh.
William Paterson got one back in the bottom half of that inning. Senior Wayne Poppe (Sloatsburg, N.J./Suffern) singled through the left side of the infield, and after advancing to second thanks to a walk by freshman Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands), Poppe ran home on a Ted King (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor South) single inside the third-base bag.
Both sides scored a single run in the eighth. Zaccardo knocked in the Red Dragons' score with a sacrifice fly, while the Pioneers' Don Reinertsen (Swartzwood, N.J./Kittatinny) plated Rick Pignatello (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) with a double down the left-field line.
Sophomore Dan VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) started and threw the first 6.2 innings, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out four. Junior Steve Schlitzer (West New York, N.J./Memorial) threw the final 2.1 innings, surrendering one unearned run, no hits and one walk while striking out two Red Dragons.
Reinertsen had two of the Pioneers' seven hits to lead the William Paterson offense.
William Paterson will host SUNY Old Westbury Monday, March 26, at 3:00 p.m.
