Pioneers' Win Streak Ends with 5-3 Loss to Alvernia

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The William Paterson baseball team (4-3-1) saw its four-game win streak come to an end, losing to Alvernia 5-3 March 15 at the Greater Phoenix (Ariz.) Invitational.

Freshman Mike Guadango's (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) single in the fourth gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead, but Alvernia plated one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-1 lead. A Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) fielder's choice and a Rick Pignatello (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) single pulled William Paterson within two runs (5-3), but the Pioneers' comeback bid was halted on a fielder's choice with the game-tying run on second.

Senior Tim Cowan (Elizabeth, N.J./Roselle Catholic) struck out six hitters in 5.1 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs. Junior Steve VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) struck out three while surrendering three hits and two earned run in 2.2 innings of relief.

The Pioneers will finish play at the Greater Phoenix Invitational Friday, March 16, against McDaniel at 3:00 p.m.
