Pioneers Sweep Anderson at Rebel Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The William Paterson softball team (7-3) swept a pair of games from Anderson, 4-1 and 2-0, March 14 at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

In the nightcap, junior Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) carried a no-hitter into the top of the seventh before allowing Anderson's only hit of the game in the final frame. The Pioneers scored their two runs in the bottom of the third. Freshman Christine Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Chelsea Winkelspecht (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) single. Winkelspecht was later sent home thanks to a Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) double.

Freshman Ashley McDonald (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) was outstanding inside the circle during the first game, striking out eight while allowing five hits and one earned run in seven innings of work. William Paterson got on the board in the top of the third when freshman Kaitlyn Lang (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock-North) doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Jamie Fields (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) single. Winkelspecht plated the Pioneers' second run, driving home McDonald with a single in the fourth. William Paterson tacked on two more runs in the seventh as Reilly doubled, Alicia Albert (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) walked and stole second, and Jessica Reibis (Jackson, N.J./Jackson) connected on a two-run single.

The Pioneers received 19 votes (26th) in the first NFCA Top 25 Poll of the season (March 8).

William Paterson will finish play at the Rebel Spring Games Thursday, March 15, in Kissimmee, Fla. The Pioneers will take on the U.S. Coast Guard at 1:00 p.m., followed by Wisconsin-Stout at 5:00 p.m.
