Pioneers Split Doubleheader with Keene State

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The William Paterson baseball team (1-2-1) to split a doubleheader against Keene State, 2-5 and 9-5, March 11 at the Greater Phoenix (Ariz.) Invitational.

In the first game of the day, senior Jon Marzella's (Cedar Knolls, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth accounted for both of the Pioneers' runs. Sophomore Dan VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) started and threw the first 6.0 innings, allowing five earned runs. Freshman Greg Stokes (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) and junior Steve VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) combined to throw an inning of scoreless relief.

In the nightcap, William Paterson plated runs in six of the seven innings to overcome a 5-1 deficit after the first frame. Senior Rick Pignatello (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Classmate Wayne Poppe (Sloatsburg, N.J./Suffern) had a pair of doubles and three RBI.

Senior Vincent Martino (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) threw the complete-game victory, striking out six in 7.0 innings on the mound.
