Pioneer Men Fall at Adelphi

Evan Seftel won the 50 free, and touched second in the 100 free, at Adelphi.

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The William Paterson swimming and diving teams split a pair of dual meets at Division II Adelphi Dec. 8. The Pioneer women's team (9-1) earned a 59-35 win, while the men (6-2) lost, 58-36.

Junior Grace McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) was one of four double winners for the women, earning victories in the 100 fly (1:05.48) and 100 back (1:05.6). Freshman Lauren Horowitz (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) touched first in the 500 (5:54.3) and 1,000 (12:02.5) frees, junior Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) won the 100 (57.92) and 200 (2:08.64) frees, and classmate Caitlin Rotondo (Brick, N.J./Methacton) finished first in the 200 IM (2:28.3) and 100 breast (1:14.9). The 200 medley relay team of Katelyn Esposito (Highland Lakes, N.J./Vernon Twp.), Rotondo, Nicole Szakacs (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) and Hartwell posted a win with a time of 2:02.38.

Freshman Evan Seftel (Montville, N.J./Montville) won the 50 free for the men in a time of 23.2, and finished second in the 100 free (51.23). Sophomore Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Ludvika Danka) was first in the 100 back (58.84) and second in the 200 free (1:48.32), while David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) placed second in the 500 (5:18.8) and 1,000 (10:58.04) frees.

Following a training trip to Curacao, Netherlands Antilles, Dec. 27 – Jan. 6, the Pioneers will return to competition Wednesday, Jan. 23, at home against Queens at 6:00 p.m.
