WAYNE, N.J. (NOVEMBER 7, 2006) - The William Paterson men's (2-1) and women's (2-1) swimming and diving teams both earned victories against SUNY Maritime Nov. 7 at Wightman Gym.
The women defeated SUNY Maritime 126-54. Junior
Katelyn Esposito (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) was a triple winner for the Pioneers, finishing first in the 1,000-meter freestyle (12:31.33), 100-meter back (1:09.13) and the 100 breaststroke (1:20.02). Sophomore
Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) won the 200 (2:09.45) and 100 (56.95) frees, while
Donivyn Schmidt (Mansfield, N.J./Warren Hills) earned her first college victory with a win in the 50 free (27.35). Other winners for WPU included junior
Jessica Lyon (Pequannock, N.J./ Pequannock) in the 500-meter freestyle (5:54.30), senior
Emily Buhler (Mays Landing, N.J./Holy Spirit) in the 200 IM (2:36.15), junior
Jamie Hopper (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) in the one-meter diving (160.50) and freshman
Giana Albruzzese (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) in the three-meter diving (148.73).
Grace McKay (Fairlawn, N.J./Fairlawn), Lyon,
Colleen Takemoto (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and Hartwell won the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 1:58.54, and
Traci Dombrowski (Union, N.J./Union), Schmidt,
Melanie Mejias (Union, N.J./Union) and Takemoto earned the win in the 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:50:54.
The William Paterson men earned a 119-93 victory against the Privateers. Freshman
Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Luduika Danka) led four double-winner Pioneers with his victories in the 50 (22.26) and 100 (48.85) freestyles. Classmate
Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) finished first in the 200 IM (2:21.53) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.63), sophomore
David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) won the 500-meter (5:12.78) and 1,000-meter (10:53.01) freestyles, and sophomore
Michael O'Shea (Edgewater, N.J./Leonia) took the titles in the one-meter (195.38) and three-meter (174.75) diving events. Freshman
Joe Shirrman (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) was the winner of the 200 free (1:58.37) and sophomore
Stefan Rosales (Rahway, N.J./St. Joseph's Metuchen) touched the wall first in the 100-meter backstroke (1:00.86). Rosales, Smith, Karas and Shirrman won the 200-meter medley relay (1:45.66).
The William Paterson women will host St. Joseph's (Long Island) Friday, Nov. 10, at 6:00 p.m. at Wightman Gym.
