Volleyball Bested by UMass Boston

BALTIMORE – The William Paterson volleyball team (2-1) was defeated, 3-0, by UMass Boston (2-0) Sept. 4 on the opening day of the Greg "Gio" Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament hosted by Johns Hopkins.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers trailed by seven (19-12) in the first set before a kill by sophomore Riley Elliott (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) sparked a 9-2 run to even the score at 21-21. The two sides went back and forth until UMass Boston tallied two consecutive points to claim the 27-25 victory.
  • WP trailed by two (8-6) in the second set, but the Beacons outscored the Pioneers 15-7 to go ahead by 10 (23-13) before securing the 25-16 win.  
  • UMass Boston built a double-digit advantage (20-10) in the third set and went on to capture the 25-15 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Elliott finished with a team-high 11 kills to go with three digs.
  • Junior Bella Demers (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) recorded a match-best 14 digs.
  • Senior Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) logged 11 assists and eight digs.
 
UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson will remain in Baltimore to take on Penn State Altoona Saturday, Sept. 5, at 12:00 p.m. before facing off against Johns Hopkins at 4:00 p.m.
