Football Storms Back for 38-14 Victory at Moravian

Nevels Contributes Two Pick-Sixes to Spark Pioneers

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The William Paterson football team (1-2) stormed back to score 38 unanswered points, erasing an early deficit for a decisive 38-14 non-conference victory at Moravian (0-4) Sept. 27.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Greyhounds took the opening possession 65 yards for a touchdown, finishing with a 32-yard pass play for a 7-0 edge with 10:25 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Moravian went up 14-0 four minutes later with a 24-yard score through the air.
  • Sophomore quarterback Nigel Jennings (Garfield, N.J./Eastside) connected with freshman wide receiver Te'Quan Thomas (Linden, N.J./Linden) for a 62-yard strike, and senior Matt Davidson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) kicked the PAT for a 14-7 game nine seconds into the second quarter.
  • Senior defensive back James Nevels (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) ended the next Greyhound possession with an interception and 68-yard return to the end zone, knotting the score at 14-14 with 14:09 on the clock.
  • The Pioneers marched the opening drive of the second half 51 yards, ending with a Davidson 38-yard field goal for a 17-14 lead with 11:55 left in the third.
  • Nevels struck again, this time with a 70-yard pick-six to extend the Pioneers' advantage to 24-14 at the 8:53 mark.
  • Jennings found junior wide receiver Brion Dorsey (Bronx, N.Y./Equality Charter) for a 23-yard score with 4:03 on clock, closing out the scoring for the third quarter at 31-14.
  • Junior running back Nazir Dale's (Camden, N.J./Brimm Medical Arts) two-yard carry pushed WP ahead by a 38-14 count with 10:08 left.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Jennings went 9-for-15 under center for 177 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
  • Senior running back Isaac Cherry (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) rushed eight times for a team-best 58 yards.
  • Dorsey caught three passes for 100 yards and a score, and Thomas posted three catches for 78 yards and a TD.
  • Senior linebacker Jayce Harmon (Milford, Del./Sussex Tech) and junior linebacker Gavin Rembert (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) each made nine tackles for WP.
  • Nevels added eight stops to his two interception returns for touchdowns.
  • Sophomore defensive lineman Joseph Pressley (Allentown, Pa./Pemberton) tallied seven tackles, including 4.5 for a loss.
  • Nevels moved into a tie for fifth place on WP's career interceptions chart (nine).
