Baseball Rally Falls Short, 8-6

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team's (15-7, 0-3 NJAC) rally fell short in an 8-6 loss to Montclair State (77-7, 3-0 NJAC) April 3 at Jeff Albies Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A three-run homer helped the Red Hawks take a 4-0 first-inning lead.
  • MSU doubled in a run in the third for a 5-0 margin.
  • The Pioneers crossed the plate twice during the bottom of the third inning. Senior first baseman Giovanni Aresta (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) drew a leadoff walk, sophomore second baseman Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) singled through the left side and junior third baseman Dylan Santos (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) delivered both runners with a double down the left-field line to make it a 5-2 game.
  • A triple and run-scoring base hit added one to the Montclair State total in the fourth, the Red Hawks tacked on a solo homer during the top half of the fifth, and MSU used an RBI-single in the sixth for an 8-2 advantage.
  • WP produced four runs in the sixth. Junior shortstop Angel Colon (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) opened the frame with a base hit to right and junior catcher Eliot Germanson (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia) walked. After a strikeout, Aresta singled in Colon, and an error on a sacrifice attempt loaded the bases for junior left fielder Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway), who was issued a walk to force across Germanson.  Santos then delivered a pitch into center field, driving in two Pioneers to cut the lead to 8-6.
  • William Paterson had the tying run at the plate twice during the home half of the ninth, but could not cash in.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Santos was 2-for-5 with a double and four RBI, and Colon finished 2-for-4 and scored a run.
  • Junior Jose Marte (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) gave up seven runs on nine hits and three walks, striking out two during 5.0 innings as the starter (1-1).
  • Junior Cole McGregor (British Columbia, Canada/Delta Secondary School) worked 1.0 inning and allowed one run, one hit and two walks, while sophomore Thomas Papeo (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) tossed 1.0 scoreless inning, posting a strikeout and a hit allowed.
  • Junior Nick Durso (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) scattered one hit over 2.0 shutout innings.
  • Both the Pioneers and the Red Hawks received votes in this week's national polls.
