Softball Bested By Rowan In NJAC Doubleheader

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (9-9, 2-2 NJAC) dropped two games against Rowan (26-0, 4-0 NJAC) during a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader April 1 at Pioneer Softball Field. The Pioneers fell 15-1 in game one after five innings and lost 9-0 in game two in five innings.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Rowan jumped ahead early, scoring three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.
  • The Profs added two runs in the third before adding three in the fourth inning to push the advantage to eight (8-0).
  • Rowan broke the game wide open in the fifth, scoring seven runs to extend their lead to 15-0.
  • WP got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when junior Taylor Palmieri (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills), freshman Stein, and senior Lauren Hutchison (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) drew walks to load the bases. Senior Courtney Schwark (Port Ewen, N.Y./Kingston) then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Palmieri to cross home.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Brandi Shortway (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) batted 1-for-2 and drew a walk.
  • Schwark drove in WP's sole run.
  • Palmieri scored the lone run for the Pioneers.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Profs took the lead in the top of the first, scoring five runs to go ahead 5-0.
  • They continued to build on their advantage, adding one run in the fourth (6-0) before extending their lead to nine (9-0) with three more runs in the fifth inning.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Shortway and junior Hailey Backo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) each went 1-for-2 at the plate.
UP NEXT:
  • WP will host Manhattanville for a non-conference doubleheader Thursday, April 3 at 3:00 p.m.
