Softball Falls at Ramapo in NJAC Doubleheader

MAHWAH, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (9-11, 2-4 NJAC) lost two games in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road doubleheader versus Ramapo (19-2, 5-1 NJAC) April 6. The Pioneers were narrowly defeated 4-3 in game one and fell 9-1 in game two after six innings.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers struck first in the top of the third inning, grabbing a 1-0 lead. Junior Taylor Palmieri (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) drew a base on balls, advanced to second on a passed ball and was sacrificed over the third before freshman Allison Stein (Hewitt, N.J./West Milford) hit an RBI single to left.
  • The Roadrunners evened the score in the bottom of the third and then took a 3-1 lead in the fourth after plating a pair of runs.
  • In the fifth, WP loaded the bases before a run crossed on a fielder's choice off the bat of senior Courtney Schwark (Port Ewen, N.Y./Kingston) to cut the deficit to one (3-2). Schwark then stole second and a run came in to score on the throw to tie the game at 3-3.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Roadrunners plated the game-winning run to secure the 4-3 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Stein batted 2-for-2 with an RBI.
  • Bythrow went 1-for-2 with one run scored.
  • Palmieri walked twice and crossed home twice.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the top of the fourth, three straight singles from Schwark, senior Lauren Hutchison (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield), and junior Brandi Shortway (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly from junior Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) plated the Pioneers' first run of the game.
  • Ramapo added two runs in the fifth, extending its lead to seven (8-1) before scoring one more in the sixth to seal the 9-1 win.

  • Schwark went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Guthy recorded an RBI.
