Softball Splits Twin Bill at Stevens

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEEHAWKEN, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (3-7) split a road doubleheader against Stevens (5-11) March 19. The Pioneers lost the first game, 9-1, after five innings but fought back in extra innings to clinch a 7-5 victory in game two.  
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Stevens scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning to grab an early 1-0 advantage.
  • WP evened the score in the second once junior Zoey Hagan (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Henry Hudson) came around to score on a costly fielding error by the Ducks.
  • In the third inning, Stevens regained the lead after plating a run before adding five more in the fourth inning to extend their advantage to seven (8-1).
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Stevens tacked on an additional run to claim a 9-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Brandi Shortway (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) went 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Campos batted once and recorded a base hit.
  • Hagan crossed home once.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first when junior Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to right center.
  • In the third, WP added another run when junior Taylor Palmieri (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) drove in classmate Hailey Backo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) with an infield single to make it a four-run game (4-0).
  • Stevens scored a run in the third and two more in the fourth to cut the deficit to one (4-3).
  • In the sixth, the Pioneers extended their lead to two (5-3) once Palmieri crossed home on a ground out by senior Lauren Hutchison (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield).
  • In the bottom half of the frame, Stevens scored two runs to even the score and force extra innings.
  • With a pair of runners in scoring position in the eighth, WP reclaimed the lead once a single from Campos drove in two.
  • The Pioneers held off the Ducks in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 7-5 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Palmieri hit 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Guthy batted 1-for-4 with a double, a run, and three RBI.
  • Campos finished 1-for-1 with two RBI.
  • Backo recorded a hit and crossed home twice.
UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson travels to Mount Saint Mary College for a road doubleheader Tuesday, March 25, at 11:00 a.m.
