Women's Basketball Falls Short in ECAC Tournament Title Game to Allegheny

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (21-9, 14-4 NJAC) fell short in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament title game, losing to Allegheny (21-8, 17-3 PAC), 56-52, March 15 at the Sports and Recreation Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both sides experienced shooting woes for most of the afternoon as Allegheny held a one-point advantage (32-31) with 5:58 left to in the third quarter.
  • A layup by junior Patty Walsh (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) with 5:40 on the clock sparked a 12-5 run to push WP ahead, 43-37, heading into the fourth frame.
  • The Pioneers extended their lead to eight (47-39) with 7:04 left to play following baskets from sophomore Mattison Chiera (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) and junior Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South).
  • However, Allegheny shot 8-for-12 (.667) from the floor in the final 6:40, piecing together a 17-5 run to close the game and earn the 56-52 victory.  
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Wells and graduate student Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) were named to the ECAC All-Tournament Team.
  • Wells finished with a game-high 25 points, adding a team-best nine rebounds and four steals.
  • Walsh logged an eight-point performance with eight boards, a steal and a block.
  • Smith totaled seven points, four assists and a rebound.
  • Chiera had six points, eight rebounds, an assist and a steal.
