Women's Basketball Cruises to 74-52 Road Win at Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (14-7, 10-4 NJAC) defeated Rutgers-Newark (3-18, 0-14), 74-52, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road game Feb. 5.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two sides were even at 23-23 with 3:36 remaining in the second quarter until WP went on a 13-2 run to take an 11-point advantage (36-25) into the half.
  • The Pioneers continued to build on their lead and outscored the Scarlet Raiders, 10-3, over the first three minutes of the third frame to extend the advantage to 18 (46-28).
  • The lead grew to as large as 24 (65-41) with 4:31 remaining in the game before WP came away with the 74-52 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) went 6-for-10 (.600) from the field for 16 points to pair with four rebounds.
  • Sophomore Mattison Chiera (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) logged 14 points, four assists, four steals and two boards.
  • Junior Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) finished with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals.
  • Junior Patty Walsh (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) scored eight points, reeled in a team-high seven boards and recorded three blocks.

  • William Paterson will host New Jersey City Saturday, Feb. 8, for a 1:00 p.m. conference game.
