Men's Basketball Falls Short at Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (5-16, 1-13 NJAC) fell, 71-68, at Rutgers-Newark (6-15, 2-12) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road game Feb. 5.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Trailing by four (44-40) with 14:38 remaining in the game, the Pioneers used a 14-3 run to grab a 54-47 lead.
  • WP maintained its slim advantage until the Scarlet Raiders went on a 12-5 run that began at the 6:18 mark to go ahead by one (65-64).
  • A pair of foul shots by senior Andre Wells (Matawan, N.J./Matawan) with two minutes left to play gave the Pioneers a one-point edge (66-65). However, Rutgers-Newark capitalized at the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the 71-68 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior David Martinez (Maywood, N.J./Hackensack) scored a team-high 19 points while adding six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
  • Wells recorded 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.
  • Senior Neftali Valentin (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) logged 12 points and three boards.

  • William Paterson will host New Jersey City Saturday, Feb. 8, for a 3:00 p.m. conference game.
