Baseball Stays Perfect, Walks Off with 4-3 Home Victory Against Stevens

Pioneers Use Ninth-Inning Sacrifice Fly to Secure Win

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (4-0) used a ninth-inning sacrifice fly to remain undefeated, walking off with a 4-3 home victory against Stevens (1-3) Feb. 27.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Two walks and a double handed the Ducks a 2-0 first-inning lead.
  • WP leveled the score at 2-2 during its first at-bat when junior designated hitter Angel Colon (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) led off with a single up the middle and senior center fielder Braden Ramirez (Middlesex, N.J./Union Catholic) drilled a pitch over the fence in left-center field.
  • The Pioneers took the lead during the home half of the seventh. Sophomore shortstop Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) ran hard on a short flare down the left-field line, turning it into a double, was sacrificed to third by senior Ruven Pino (Fairview, N.J./Bergen Catholic), and scored the go-ahead run when Colon singled to center.
  • Stevens made it a 3-3 game in the eighth with a walk, base hit, sacrifice bunt and RBI-single.
  • Junior third baseman Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) started the bottom of the ninth inning with a double to left-center field, and was sacrificed to third by senior catcher Eliot Germanson (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia). The Ducks intentionally walked Colon to put runners at the corners with one out, but Ramirez made them pay when he lifted a fly ball to deep center, a sacrifice fly that plated Brown for the game-winning run.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ramirez finished 1-for-4 with a home run, sac fly and three RBI. Colon was 2-for-4 while posting an RBI and run scored.
  • Sophomore Robert Nathan (Lords Valley, Pa./Vernon Twp.) twirled the first 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and four walks, registering four strikeouts.
  • Junior Cole McGregor (British Columbia, Canada/Delta Secondary School) tallied a walk and a strikeout over 1.0 shutout inning of action, while sophomore Kevin Reiner (Maywood, N.J./Hackensack) scattered two hits during 1.0 scoreless inning.
  • Junior Chris Quartuccio (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) was charged with one run, one hit and a walk. Senior Neel Telidevara (Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two batters in 1.0 inning on the bump.
  • Junior Nick Durso (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) picked up the victory (1-0) with 1.0 shutout inning of relief, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
