Women’s Basketball Stays Unbeaten, Rolls to 94-50 Victory

Pioneers Win at Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (8-0, 4-0 NJAC) remained unbeaten on the season, rolling to a 94-50 victory at Rutgers-Newark (2-8, 0-4 NJAC) Dec. 10.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers wasted no time, racing out to a 21-7 lead during the first 5:43 of the contest by making six of their first eight (.750) field-goal attempts.
  • Carrying a 30-13 advantage into the second period, WP scored seven of the final eight points of the session for a 48-29 edge at the break.
  • William Paterson was 18-for-36 (.500) from the field and owned an 18-3 edge in points off turnovers during the game's final 20 minutes, and never saw its lead dip below 40 points after the 6:00 mark of the third quarter.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior forward Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) made all 10 of her free-throw attempts en route to a game-best 20 points, notching four rebounds.
  • Junior guard Mattison Chiera (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) added four rebounds and three assists to her season-best 16 points and three steals.
  • Graduate student Megan Sears (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) collected 15 tallies and a game-high eight rebounds, while junior guard Jada Jacobs (Mount Laurel, N.J./Medford Tech) posted 11 points, six boards and five steals.
  • The Pioneers are off to their best start to a season since the 2011-12 campaign when WP was 15-0 on its way to a 26-3 overall record, conference tournament title and NCAA Tournament second-round appearance.
  • William Paterson received votes in this week's Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Poll.
