Football Suffers 17-7 Loss to Kean

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (2-7, 1-5 NJAC) suffered a 17-7 loss to visiting Kean (3-6, 2-4 NJAC) Nov. 8 at Wightman Stadium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A missed Cougar field-goal attempt as time expired kept the game scoreless going into halftime.
  • Kean was successful on a 42-yard attempt with 5:26 to play in the third quarter, taking a 3-0 lead.
  • The Cougars found the end zone with a seven-yard carry, making it a 10-0 advantage 48 seconds into the fourth.
  • The Pioneers answered during their next possession, using a 13-yard completion by sophomore quarterback Nigel Jennings (Garfield, N.J./Eastside) to freshman wide receiver Hassan Moore (Carteret, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) for a touchdown with 9:32 remaining. Senior Matt Davidson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) kicked the PAT to cut the margin to 10-7.
  • Kean capitalized on an interception deep in WP territory, eventually turning it into a one-yard rushing touchdown and a 17-7 advantage with 3:33 on the clock.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Jennings went 6-for-21 for 85 yards and a touchdown.
  • Sophomore running back Ray'Mir Johnson (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) carried 14 times for 68 yards, and Moore caught four passes for 66 yards and a score.
  • Junior linebacker Gavin Rembert (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) made a career-high 17 tackles (seven solo, 3.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks).
  • Senior defensive back Anthony Macera (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) added an interception to his 13 stops (seven solo, 1.0 TFL), while senior linebacker Jayce Harmon (Milford, Del./Sussex Tech) posted 12 tackles (two solo, 0.5 TFL) and an interception.
 
UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson will wrap up is season Saturday, Nov. 15, celebrating Senior Day prior to a 1:00 p.m. home kickoff against Montclair State.
