Women’s Basketball Takes Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Title, 62-41

YORK, Pa. – Behind senior forward Renee Wells' (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) game-high 18 points, the William Paterson women's basketball team (2-0) seized the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic title with a 62-41 championship-game victory against host York, Pa. (1-1) Nov. 15.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers scored the first 10 points of the championship game, racing out to a 13-7 advantage by the end of the first period.
  • A 7-2 run to end the second period allowed WP to take a 27-12 lead into the locker room, and the Pioneers' edge never fell below that 15-point margin during the game's final 20 minutes.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Wells, the tourney's Most Valuable Player, added eight rebounds, four assists and two steals to her 18 tallies.
  • Junior guard Mattison Chiera (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) secured a spot on the All-Tournament Team with her nine points, four assists and two steals.
  • Senior forward Patty Walsh (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) chipped in eight tallies and six rebounds. Junior guard Jada Jacobs (Mount Laurel, N.J./Medford Tech) notched six points, five boards and five steals.
  • WP owned a +12 turnover margin (30-18), turning it into a 27-11 edge in points scored off the miscues, and held York to 2-for-20 (.100) shooting from beyond the arc.
