THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The William Paterson men's swimming and diving team (5-2) narrowly fell in a road meet against SUNY Maritime College (4-2), 131-126, on Nov. 11.

TOP PERFORMERS:

• Junior Justin Melli (Erma, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) led the Pioneers with first-place finishes in the 500 free (5:21.43), 1000 free (11.71.30), and 200 fly (2:15.43).
• Senior Nicky Byrd (Purchase, N.Y./Harrison) was victorious in the 100 back (1:00.34) and 200 back (2:15.48).
• Sophomore Mario Pontidis (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) finished first in the 50 free (23.59) and 100 free (53.62).
• WP won the 200 freestyle relay, with efforts from Pontidis, junior Zak Li (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley), Melli, and freshman Horain Reid (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central), finishing with a time of 1:54.23.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Freshman Andre Miguel Ovejas (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) trimmed time from his 100 fly best (1:05.39).
• Reid posted a new personal record in the 200 free (2:08.19).

UP NEXT:

• William Paterson travels to Brooklyn College on Saturday, Dec. 6, for a 1:00 p.m. meet.
