Field Hockey Falls to No. 9 Stevens

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson field hockey team (2-7) stayed close early, but visiting No. 9 Stevens (9-1) was able to secure a 7-2 victory Oct. 3 at Wightman Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Ducks got on the scoreboard with a penalty corner goal in the sixth minute.
  • The Pioneers answered less than two minutes later off a corner of their own. Sophomore back/midfielder Sofia Russel's insert went to sophomore forward Ali Stoner (Branchville, N.J./High Point), who left it off for sophomore back Courtney DiPrenda (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes). Her pass was finished off by sophomore forward/midfielder Julia Dennehy (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk), making it a 1-1 game.
  • An own goal made it a 2-1 Stevens advantage 35 seconds later, and the Ducks later converted a penalty corner 2:33 before the end of the first quarter.
  • WP made it a 3-2 game in the 22nd minute when Stoner connected on penalty corner passes from Dennehy and junior midfielder Kelly Cammarata (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex).
  • The Ducks added a corner goal in the 26th minute, and bounced in a shot in the 30th minute for a 5-2 halftime lead.
  • Two more penalty corners resulted in Stevens goals during the 33rd and 53rd minutes.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore Grace Jenkins (Bloomsbury, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) collected 14 saves for WP, her fifth double-digit effort of the season.
  • Cammarata registered her first career point with an assist.
