Softball Sweeps New Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (2-18, 2-6 NJAC) swept an NJAC twin bill at New Jersey City (6-13, 1-7 NJAC) on April 9. The Pioneers secured a 5-2 game-one victory and bested the Gothic Knights in five innings during game two, coming out on top 9-1.
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) opened the first inning with a single to right and advanced to second on a walk by senior Gianna Mulato (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.). With one out, graduate student Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) doubled to left field, plating Guthy and Mulato for a 2-0 advantage.
  • New Jersey City closed the gap in the bottom of the first with three hits and an error (2-2).
  • With two outs in the sixth, junior Kylie Bythrow (Deptford, N.J./Deptford) pinch hit and came out with a double down the left-field line. Sophomore Mikayla Reimer (Jersey City, N.J./Dr. Ronald E. McNair) plated Bythrow with a single to right field to take the lead (3-2). Junior Courtney Schwark (Port Ewen, N.Y./Kingston) pinch ran for Reimer. Graduate student Jillian Bigos (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) sent one to the second baseman, resulting in an error and scoring Schwark (4-2). Senior Haley Weinberger (Williamstown, N.J./Hammonton) singled through the left side to place runners on the corners. Guthy secured the Pioneers' fifth and last run with a single to left field (5-2).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Monahan finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double.
  • Guthy hit 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, earning her first multi-hit game in her career.
  • Reimer secured her first collegiate RBI.
  • Bythrow went 2-for-2, adding a double and crossing the plate once.
  • Weinberger posted two hits in three at-bats.
  • Mulato, Schwark and Bigos crossed home plate.
  • Guthy (1-9) pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and two runs. The East Stroudsburg, Pa., native posted two strikeouts.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Leading off the game for the Pioneers, Guthy hit a triple to left center and scored on a single through the right side by Mulato. With one out and a runner on first, Monahan sent one over the right-field fence to grab a 3-0 advantage. Freshman Samantha Campos (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) continued the Pioneers' run in the first with a single through the left side. Campos advanced to second on a groundout. With two outs, Weinberger singled to right field, plating Campos (4-0).
  • Mulato allowed no hits during the first and second innings.
  • In the third, senior Grace Gaskill (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) opened the inning with a single up the middle. A throwing error by the shortstop placed Gaskill on second and Campos at first. Bythrow singled through the left side to load the bases. Weinberger scored Gaskill with sacrifice fly to center field (5-0).
  • WP opened the fourth inning with three consecutive singles by Bigos, Guthy, and Mulato. Mulato's single up the middle scored Bigos. The Gothic Knights bounced back with a double play but left Guthy on third. Monahan singled to shortstop, plating Guthy (7-0).
  • New Jersey City cut the deficit to six in the fourth with two singles, a stolen base, and a sacrifice fly (7-1).
  • In the fifth, Weinberger singled to left center and advanced to second on a single through the left side by junior Lauren Hutchison (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield). With two outs, Guthy singled through the left side to load the bases. Mulato doubled to right center, plating Weinberger and Hutchison (9-1).
  • Pitcher Lindsey Acker (Wenonah, N.J./Deptford) closed out the game with a double play and a strikeout swinging.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Mulato hit 3-for-4, recording a double, four RBI and a run scored.
  • Monahan went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored. The Butler, N.J., native secured her fifth multi-hit game this season and eighth career home run.
  • Weinberger finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, crossing home once and stealing a base. This was the Williamstown, N.J., native's fifth multi-hit game this season.
  • Guthy posted three hits in four at-bats, including a triple, and crossed the plate twice.
  • Campos and Bythrow recorded a stolen base.
  • Mulato (1-7) pitched 3.0 innings, allowing one run and three hits. She tied her season-best three strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Kylie Anthony (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) relived Mulato, collecting one strikeout.
  • Acker made her season debut inside the circle, tossing the last inning.

  • William Paterson hosts Manhattanville for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 11.
