Baseball Drops Extra-Innings Affair at Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (7-18, 2-5 NJAC) was edged, 13-12, by Ramapo (17-8, 6-1 NJAC) in a 10-inning New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road game April 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Ramapo went ahead 1-0 in the second inning after a passed ball with the bases loaded allowed a run to cross.
  • The Pioneers evened the score in the third after a costly throwing error by Ramapo with runners on first and second. After the second out of the frame was recorded, junior Connor Luckie (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton High West) ripped a two-RBI single into center to put William Paterson ahead, 3-1.
  • The Roadrunners got a run back in the bottom half of the third to pull within one (3-2.)
  • William Paterson had two runners on with two outs in the fourth when senior Jake Lutz (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) ripped a two-RBI double to left to extend the advantage to three (5-2).
  • Ramapo plated a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Pioneers responded with five runs in the fifth. With one out and the bases loaded, junior Giovanni Aresta (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) drove in a run with an infield single. A fielder's choice and a wild pitch gave WP two more runs before junior Tom Radigan (Verona, N.J./Verona) blasted a two-run home run over the fence in right to push the lead to seven (10-3).
  • The Roadrunners went on to plate seven unanswered runs and even the score in the eighth at 10-10 and force extra innings.
  • In the 10th, the Pioneers loaded the bases with no outs when senior Noah Cabassa (Pomona, N.Y./North Rockland) grounded out to the second baseman and a run crossed on the play to give WP the one-run edge (11-10). Junior Tyler Ruban (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) later followed with a sacrifice fly to left and the advantage grew to two (12-10) before the inning came to a close.
  • Ramapo rallied in the bottom half of the final frame by scoring three runs en route to earning the 13-12 come-from-behind conference win.
