Baseball Splits NJAC Doubleheader Against TCNJ

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (6-13, 1-1 NJAC) split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader with No. 19 The College of New Jersey (13-4, 1-1 NJAC) March 30 at Jeff Albies Field. The Pioneers earned a 6-2 victory in game one before the Lions took game two, 11-3.

GAME ONE:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after a leadoff double and a two-out RBI single up the middle plated a run.
  • TCNJ tacked on another run in the second to push the lead to two (2-0).
  • In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) ripped a leadoff single to left for WP and crossed home on a two-run homer to left center by junior Austin Jack (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) to even the score at 2-2.
  • William Paterson broke the game open in the eighth with a four-run frame. The bases were loaded when Kobylakiewicz grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed the go-ahead run to score. Junior Giovanni Aresta (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) then doubled down the left field line to add an insurance run before Jack hit a two-run single to right center that made it a four-run game (6-2).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Jack batted 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and a run scored.
  • Aresta logged a double with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Kobylakiewicz crossed home twice during a 1-for-3 game with an RBI.
  • Sophomore Jose Marte (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) earned his first career win after pitching four shutout innings of relief with three strikeouts while allowing just one hit.
  • Senior Ian Metzger (Verona, N.J./Verona) logged six punchouts and allowed just one earned run in five innings of work as the starter.

GAME TWO:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • TCNJ plated a run in the first and three in the second to take an early 4-0 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the second, Jack led off the inning for the Pioneers with a walk and later scored once sophomore Sean McAllister (Toms River, N.J./Manchester Twp.) laced a double into the gap in left center to trim the deficit to three (4-1).
  • William Paterson made it a one-run game (4-3) in the sixth after Kobylackiewicz walked and junior Connor Luckie (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton High West) singled before Aresta lined a two-run triple into right center.
