Baseball Topped by Wisconsin-La Crosse in Extra Innings, 5-4

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The William Paterson baseball team (5-7) was handed a 5-4 loss in 10 innings by Wisconsin-La Crosse (5-2) at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational March 18.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore Sean McAllister (Toms River, N.J./Manchester Twp.) drew a base on balls to open the top of the third and later scored on a wild pitch to give William Paterson the early 1-0 edge.
  • In the fourth, the Pioneers had runners on first and second when senior Noah Cabassa (Pomona, N.Y./North Rockland) ripped an RBI single into right field before McAllister drove in a run on a single through the right side to make it a three-run game (3-0).
  • The Eagles trimmed the deficit to two (3-1) in the bottom of the fourth after a base hit was logged with runners on the corners.
  • It remained a two-run game until Wisconsin-La Crosse plated another run in the seventh to pull within one (3-2).
  • The Pioneers got one run back in the top of the ninth after junior Connor Luckie (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton High West) hit a sacrifice fly to right with the bases loaded.
  • However, the Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
  • In the 10th, Wisconsin-La Crosse opened the frame with a double to left center. After the runner advanced to third on a groundout to the right side of the infield, the Pioneers intentionally walked back-to-back batters. The Eagles were able to get the run across though on a sacrifice fly to left to claim the 5-4 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Kobylakiewicz went 3-for-5 at the plate.
  • Cabassa finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • McAllister crossed home twice and drove in one run during a two-hit outing.
  • Junior Jose Marte (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) pitched five innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits.

  • The Pioneers will square off against Middlebury Tuesday, March 19, for a 10:30 a.m. game.
