Offense Erupts in Baseball's 14-2 Home Triumph Over SUNY Cobleskill

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (2-6) posted a season-high mark in hits and runs scored during a 14-2 home triumph over SUNY Cobleskill (2-8) March 11 in a non-conference game at Jeff Albies Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Fighting Tigers took a 1-0 advantage in the first inning after a two-out double down the right field line allowed a run to cross.
  • William Paterson evened the score in the bottom half of the opening frame once junior Giovanni Aresta (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) launched a ball over the fence in right field for his first career home run.
  • The Pioneers grabbed their first lead of the game after plating three runs in the fourth. Senior Noah Cabassa (Pomona, N.Y./North Rockland) and junior Connor Luckie (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton High West) reached on back-to-back one-out singles before Cabassa came in to score on a successful suicide squeeze by junior Austin Jack (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.).
  • Sophomore Dylan Santos (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) then drove in two runs on a double to the gap in left center to extend the advantage to three (4-1).
  • William Paterson opened the fifth inning with a pair of singles from senior Jake Lutz (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) and freshman Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge). Lutz crossed home on a groundout to the left side of the infield and a Cabassa base knock drove in Kobylakiewicz to make it 6-1 game.
  • The Pioneers were not finished at the plate in the frame as a Luckie RBI double down the left field line and a Jack triple to center pushed the WP advantage to eight (9-1).
  • The Pioneers tacked on two runs in the seventh to extend their lead to double figures (11-1) after Lutz hit a leadoff triple and scored on a two-run home run to left center by Kobylakiewicz.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, the Pioneers had runners on first and second with two outs before Jack recorded an RBI single. Sophomore Will Pitt (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) followed with an RBI double to right before a bases-loaded walk allowed the third run of the inning to cross to make it a 12-run game (14-2).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman Robert Nathan (Lords Valley, Pa./Vernon Twp.) made his first collegiate start and earned the win after allowing just one run on five hits with eight strikeouts in six innings of action.
  • Cabassa finished with a three-hit game to go with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Lutz went 2-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored.
  • Kobylakiewicz recorded his first collegiate homer as part of a two-hit day with two RBI and two runs scored.
