Women's Basketball Edges TCNJ on Senior Day, 63-59

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (8-14, 6-9 NJAC) came out victorious on senior day after defeating The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), 63-59, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game Feb. 3 at the Sports and Recreation Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Lions got into the scoring column first, but the Pioneers responded with an 11-4 run that spanned 4:04 of action to go ahead, 11-6.
  • TCNJ evened the score at 15-15 with a layup to open the second quarter, but William Paterson put up five unanswered points to regain the advantage with 7:19 on the clock.
  • The Pioneers carried a four-point edge (30-26) into the third quarter before an 8-1 run extended the lead to 11 (38-27) with 6:12 left in the frame.
  • Despite a 9-2 TCNJ run to pull within four (40-36) with 2:05 on the clock, the Pioneers maintained their slim lead and went into the fourth quarter ahead by seven (45-38).
  • Senior Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) brought the advantage back to double figures with a 3-pointer at the 8:28 mark of the final frame.
  • With 4:40 left to play, the Lions went on an 10-3 run to make it a five-point game (53-38), but William Paterson iced the game at the foul line and secured the 63-59 home conference victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Smith scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-15 (.600) shooting with four rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.
  • Sophomore Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) went 5-for-10 (.500) from the field for 14 points to pair with eight rebounds.
  • Sophomore Patricia Walsh (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) finished with eight points and added eight boards.
  • Junior Jade Martinez (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) logged an eight-point outing with three rebounds.
  • The Pioneers won their third straight game to mark their longest win streak of the season.

  • William Paterson will head on the road to take on Rutgers-Newark Wednesday, Feb. 7, in a 6:00 p.m. conference game.
