Baseball’s Comeback Falls Short Against Stevens, 3-1

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (1-1) rallied late but couldn't overcome Stevens (3-0), 3-1, Feb. 22 at Jeff Albies Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A muffed throw, sacrifice bunt, groundout and RBI-single netted the Ducks one run during the top of the third inning.
  • Stevens doubled its lead in the seventh with two base hits and a sacrifice, 2-0.
  • The Ducks strung together a double, wild pitch and run-scoring single for a 3-0 edge in the eighth inning.
  • The Pioneers put the potential go-ahead run on base during the home half of the ninth. Junior first baseman Giovanni Aresta (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) drew a one-out walk and junior pinch hitter Ruven Pino (Fairview, N.J./Bergen Catholic) was issued a base on balls, followed by a wild pitch that advanced the runners to second and third. Sophomore pinch hitter Sean McAllister (Toms River, N.J./Manchester Twp.) sent a ground ball to the left side that was thrown wide to first, allowing Aresta to cross the plate. After a strikeout, junior right fielder Austin Jack (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) drew a walk to load the bases with two outs, but a final strikeout ended the threat.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior designated hitter RJ Mehnert (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and Jack each contributed a hit.
