Women's Basketball Captures Road Win at Rutgers-Camden, 76-61

CAMDEN, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (10-14, 8-9 NJAC) captured its fifth consecutive victory after defeating Rutgers-Camden (1-23, 1-16 NJAC), 76-61, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road game Feb. 10.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers grabbed a double-digit lead (20-9) after the first 10 minutes of action paced by a nine-point effort from sophomore Patricia Walsh (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North).
  • With 7:04 on the clock in the second quarter, a 3-pointer by freshman Mattison Chiera (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) sparked a 20-9 William Paterson run that put the Pioneers ahead by 21 (43-22) heading into the half.
  • The William Paterson lead grew to as large as 28 (56-28) with 3:56 remaining in the third quarter after senior Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) buried a shot from long range.
  • Rutgers-Camden outscored the Pioneers, 23-16, in the final quarter, but William Paterson hung on for the 76-61 road victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) finished with a game-high 20 points.
  • Smith logged a 13-point outing.
  • Junior Jade Martinez (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) had 11 points.
  • Walsh recorded 10 points.
  • Freshman Menna Hafiz (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) scored six points and reeled in a game-high 10 rebounds.
